    You're travelling to Russia and want to get to know the people, but don't have much time to prepare. You need a few useful phrases to survive with in public and to communicate with the people you will meet. You want to learn as you go. Maybe you have time and opportunity to delve deeper into the language - a pre-arranged language course perhaps or a work posting abroad - but right now you simply need to communicate quickly.

    Tip: You're about to learn to communicate in a new language. Hopefully you'll be communicating a lot so let's make sure you are starting off well.

    Never leave home without your language kit. This could include:

    a printout of some or all of these pages
    your notes and vocab lists - a small notebook is ideal
    a pen to allow you to add to your notes and sketch words you don't know yet
    the "Pictionary"; illustrations of concepts you may want to communicate - or learn to talk about
    a handy pocket dictionary
