You're travelling abroad and want to communicate, but don't have much
time to prepare. You need a few useful phrases to survive with in public, and to
communicate with the people you will meet. You want to learn as you go. Maybe you have
time and opportunity to delve deeper into the language - a pre-arranged language course
perhaps, or a work posting abroad - but right now you simply need to communicate quickly. Read on below on how to quick start into active communication. |
Of course, you can't learn to speak a new language fluently instantly, but you can communicate basic questions and ideas with relatively little preparation. This language guide will not have you learn the language perfectly well, but enable you to communicate sufficiently to get you where you need to go and make people smile along the way.
WARNING: If you think you are obliged to acquire perfect
linguistic abilities from the outset - DO NOT PROCEED. Only if you are ready to learn as
you go, and are happy to speak pidgin in the interim, continue beyond this point.
Although these pages will teach you intelligible and easy-to-learn phrases, this will also
at times include grammatical imperfections.

Various helpful notes are interspersed with the language learning material.
At the top of each language page, estimates of actual speakers of that language are given thanks to the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Languages. "Native speakers" are those for whom the language in question is the mother tongue, the first language. Official language population gives the population estimate for those countries where the language has official status, which may not necessarily be the correct number of actual speakers of that language. Chances are though, that even within communities where the "official language" is not actually spoken, or where another official language has that place, people you are likely to come into contact with, e.g. a bus conductor, will have a basic mastery of that official language, or be able to quickly find somebody who does.
The percentage given is a percentage of a total estimated world population (U.S. Census Bureau) of 6 billion (early morning, Tuesday, 10-Aug-99 - to be precise;1 billion more since 26-Dec-1986). In other words, you'd be able to communicate with n% of the world. Makes the effort more worthwhile, doesn't it?
